The Importance Of Choosing The Right Bowling Ball

By Sean Bailey

If you are a beginning bowler and you have thought of buying a bowling ball, you will probably be shocked at how many options you have. For example, you will need to decide on coverstock, which is the shell, or outer surface, of the bowling ball. Coverstock comes in either shiny for a sliding ball or dull for a rolling ball. There is also the weight block, or core, of the bowling ball to decide on. This controls not only how heavy the ball is, but the density of it also determines how the ball will move. The larger the core extends outward, the greater the ball's top weight is said to be. And then there is the pin location that states specifically where the weight block in the bowling ball ends. And that is only an example of some of the options for the ball itself.

You will also want to understand the terminology of the bowling ball. This terminology that describes the way you play the game will have a lot to do with your selection of the proper bowling ball. Each person has their own style when bowling. For example, there are such terms as track flare, ball speed, and axis tilt to consider.

Track flare refers to the appearance of what looks like a ring of oil on your ball as it goes down the lane. Track flare indicates how your ball is rotating as it moves down the lane. For most bowlers, the ball will actually change its rotating axis as it travels.

Ball speed is of course how fast the bowling ball is rolling. Some people play modified bowling games with scoring based on speed as well as pins. Many bowling alleys, and nearly all of the professional competitions broadcast on television, will display the ball speed along with the score just for fun.

Axis tilt is the angle at which your ball is rotating. This can vary a great deal from one bowler to the next.

Your goal towards purchasing a bowling ball is to take note of all of these pieces of information the next time you go bowling. Then take your notes with you when you go to the bowling shop and see if you can get an expert to help you pick out a ball that will go well with your style of bowling. If you do not get a feel that the person helping your truly understands what you are saying or what your needs are, find another store. It won't do you any good to purchase the wrong type of ball. In many cases they will sell bowling balls at the alley itself which may allow you to demonstrate your bowling for the salesperson so that they can really help you pick out a good bowling ball for you.
