The Increasing Popularity of Table Tennis

Did you know that table tennis is one of the largest participation sports in the world?  It is very popular in Asia and the game's popularity has now spread across Africa and Europe.  This sport is suitable for players of all ages and you do not have to be a jockey to participate.  The game advertises that it exercises both the body and the mind, helps develop eye hand coordination and that it is fun to play.

You want to learn more about the game and want to try your hand at it.  It could not be that difficult to play table tennis.  You are just flipping a small ball back and forth across a long table.  Well, playing table tennis correctly requires speeds, power and agility not to mention skill, coordination and dexterity.

It is played on a special table that is about 9x5 feet long and 2 feet x 6 inches wide and can be a permanent addition to your game room or you can use a portable table that can be broken down and stored between uses.

Some people will mistakenly think you are playing the old game of ping-pong, but this can not be further from the truth.  There are a few differences between the two games and a true table tennis competitor will be highly insulted if you say he plays ping-pong.

So, what is the draw to table tennis?  It is a game that has been around for years, is played indoors and requires little equipment.  In many places, the table and equipment is available free for people to play-this is usually the case at most recreation centers, sports halls, and social clubs.  Most people have seen others play the game before and there is a tendency to think that it is an easy game to play.

This is an understandable mistake, but it takes more than a desire to be a good player.  You must learn to play on a small table surface and with a very light and tiny ball.  It requires lighting fast reflexes, great agility and some level of physical fitness.  You will also need to learn the various strokes and spin techniques.

You may want to start learning how to play by signing up for a class at a local recreation center or hiring a personal coach.  Now wait, a coach to play this game?  Yes, this is a game that requires special techniques to properly compete and to not cause an injury to yourself or others.  This game just like all other games needs to be learned correctly.  If you play the game incorrectly, it will be hard to unlearn any bad habits you may have picked up along the way.

Now get out there, sign up for a class, and learn how to play table tennis.  You will be amazed at the number of people playing the game and that its popularity is growing.  Buy some special bats and balls and practice in your living room against one wall-hopefully, the neighbors will not complain.  And, no matter what your age, the exercise will do you good.
