Do different flights really make a difference when playing darts?
I have been playing cricket a good deal recently and I'm using my mom's old darts from sometime in the 80s.
I like them, they are heavy and simple, they don't have a brand on them but the metal looks like another set of accudart ones that my father had.
After throwing using your standard flights, I looked around my house for other flights to experiment with. I found some very small ones, much narrower and look sort of like the feathers on an arrow (with four wings, however).
I threw with them and I like them, however the angle the dart entered the board was a bit different, the flight was lower than the tip but I didn't have to throw as hard. It seemed like there was less drag on the dart.
I was wondering how the different flights affect the path as well as recommended darts if I were to buy new.

The first thing you are doing right is experimenting with different dart setups 
In general terms flights do provide lift so as a rule of thumb a heavier dart should require a larger surface area for the wing.
However the length of the darts is also a consideration as the shaft in conjunction with the flight provides stability to the dart (i.e. keeps it flying straight). So as another general rule of thumb the longer the shaft the smaller the light can be.
One of the main factors in how a dart flies is how you throw it so experimenting with different flights and shafts can help you tune your darts to suit your style.
Flights and shafts are available in all kinds of shapes and sizes and they are fairly inexpensive so have fun and find what works best for you
