Bowling Hall Of Fame
By Robert Grazian
25 years ago the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame opened in St Louis. This was a natural choice for a location as St Louis had been a huge part of the history of bowling and many of the great stars had come from the area and played for the St Louis Buds - named after Budweiser Beer which is brewed in St Louis. It seemed like the bowling hall of fame had found a safe home where fans could visit and learn about the stars of the lanes.
However, although bowling is still a huge hobby of many American's, it would seem that the sport may have had its glory days in the 50s and 60s and the bowling hall of fame was starting to lose it's popularity compared to the baseball park next door. Attendance of less than 30,000 per year was becoming normal whereas the baseball park would admit 40,000 for just one game. Figures at the museum and hall of fame did swell slightly when there was a baseball match next door, but some believe that this was only as a result of the museum sharing its premises with the Cardinal's baseball team hall of fame.
So, in October 2008, the bowling hall of fame and museum will be moving to new premises where it will have a new look and hopefully a whole lot of new visitors. It is going to be housed alongside the US Bowling Congress which is the governing body for amateur bowlers, as well as the Bowling Proprietors Association of America. Therefore it will benefit from being amongst fellow bowling enthusiasts, rather than sitting next to a baseball park.
From this new bowling campus venue, The International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame will continue to exhibit their memorabilia and the wonderful time tunnel, which give the history of bowling from as long ago as ancient Egypt. There will obviously still be the great Bowling Hall of Fame with all the names listed from BPAA, PWBA, PBA and USBC and some wonderful information about your favourite stars. Also, at the Museum and Hall of Fame you can also check out the Hometown Heroics database which has a huge amount of information regarding teams and hall of famers. You can also order mementos through the database.
Although it is a little sad that The International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame is going to be moving from its St Louis home, it is a positive action to relocate to a campus where bowling is more in evidence as a sport and where the bowling Hall of Fame will have more fans visiting. The new premises will no doubt breath new life into the Museum and will ensure a great increase in the number of visitors.
